Following the many letters received, I have finally decided to publish photos of the accident that occurred in the second round of the GP.
In the second lap, Jackie Oliver’s BRM hit Jacky’s Ferrari at the Bugatti turn. The Ferrari was spinning out and both cars immediately went up in flames. Jackie Oliver managed to get out of his BRM and ran away from the blaze. Jacky could not unhook his harness. After more than 10 seconds in the flames, he managed to get out of his car alone, but the visor of his helmet had melted and it was completely blinded that he tried to move away. After a few steps, he fell into the gasoline on fire spread on the track and his fireproof suit caught fire.
Getting up, he was trying to get away from the blaze by heading towards the cries of the rescuers who were waiting for him on the other side of the track because the race had not stopped. Finally, he arrived near the rescuers, a police officer then tried to extinguish the flames with his bare hands before a high-pressure fire hose was directed at Jacky who was conscious. He explained how to remove the strap holding his helmet that a commissioner was trying to remove. Suffering from second and third degree burns (caused by his fall into the gas on the track) he will be treated in a local clinic before being evacuated to Belgium the same evening. A real miracle!!!
