Tribute to Jacky Ickx

ARTICLE: "ORIGINAL REPLICA"

Since always, like any Jacky Ickx fan, I dreamed of owning one of his helmets. Utopian dream since all these helmets were distributed to privileged people during or just after the racing career of our champion.
A few months ago, we saw two of these helmets being sold at Christies but the auction reached prices that only relatively wealthy people can afford to pay for such an acquisition.

Of course, Jacky had offered me, during our first meeting, a replica of his helmet in scale 1⁄2 that I am very proud to own but, despite the authenticity of the detail, it remains a reduced model.

What was my surprise when one morning the postman handed me a package that two Canadian friends had sent me ! The emotion was even greater than the surprise when I discovered the magnificent replica of the double-cut helmet which, for me, is the most beautiful of all the helmets from Jacky. This emotion was so strong that I cried like a child, tears of happiness.

The helmet was accompanied by these words:

Hello Mr. Garnier
We have been admirers of Jacky for many years. It is for this reason that we appreciate each of the visits we make to the site you have developed on this great and eminently friendly pilot.
The diligent work you have done to enrich and document the site deserves all our admiration.
It is for this reason that we wish to offer you this replica of the 1978 Le Mans helmet.
We know that you will appreciate this present better than anyone.
We have heard the news of your heart disease. We would like, both of us, to offer you our best wishes for a speedy recovery and wish that this little present accelerates your healing.
Thank you
Gilles Brassard

A few days later, Jacky Ickx called me and I told him the story. He found her very beautiful and he said: “Well, we are going to make, from this line, an original because I am going to sign this helmet!” Appointment was then made for September 9th for a lunch in our usual restaurant.

That day, at the agreed time, we had lunch together and after the meal, it was with pleasure that Jacky put his signature on the helmet. Not a simple autograph… but rather a dedication of which I am very proud:  “To my very great friend Julien!”. A phrase that means a lot to me.
So that’s how this replica became original and unique: by the very hand of Jacky Ickx.

Thanks to Mr Brassard et Mr Ickx !
